If you're looking for a highly capable off-road SUV with handsome styling, you should consider the 2024 Ford Bronco. Not only will the 2024 Bronco get you to out-of-the-way destinations, but it also handles well and drives smoothly on paved roads and freeways. People enjoy driving this iconic SUV because of the ability to remove the doors and roof to let in fresh air and feel the wind. You, too, can be part of the history of this renowned SUV.

History of the Ford Bronco

In 1965, Ford released the first Bronco as the nation's first sports utility vehicle, now better known as the SUV. They named it the Bronco because Ford was adding another pony to the stable to go along with the wildly popular Ford Mustang sports car. Because of the ruggedness of the early Bronco models, off-road enthusiasts and backcountry adventurers appreciated its capability, and the Bronco became known as an off-road-ready vehicle.

By 1996, sales of the Bronco began to decline as consumer tastes changed and other SUVs became available. However, in June of 2021, Ford began manufacturing the redesigned and modernized Bronco. Before the SUV rolled out of the plant, drivers in the United States and Canada had placed over 190,000 reservations for the Bronco.

Trims and Exterior Colors

For 2024, the Bronco sees few changes from the 2021 versions, and the available trims are the Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, Heritage Edition, Wildtrak, Everglades, Heritage Limited Edition, and Raptor. Express your adventurous personality with exterior colors such as Eruption Green, Shadow Black, Azure Gray, Carbonized Gray Metallic, or Cactus Gray. All trims can come with two doors or four doors except for the Outer Banks, Everglades, and Raptor trims, which come exclusively with four doors.

Engine Options

Ford offers the Bronco with four engine options. The base engine is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed manual transmission comes standard with this engine, or you can choose the optional 10-speed automatic transmission instead. The next engine option is a 2.7-liter turbocharged V-6 that puts out 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with the 10-speed automatic transmission, and it comes standard on the Badlands and Wildtrak trims.

If you opt for the Everglades trim, you get the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with the 10-speed automatic trim as standard. If you plan on using your 2024 Bronco primarily for off-roading, choose the Raptor trim with its turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 418 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The Raptor also comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Suspension Systems

The Bronco excels in handling both smooth pavement and off-road tracks with its advanced suspension systems. All trims come standard with traction-grabbing four-wheel drive and Ford's exclusive terrain management system, aptly named G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain). G.O.A.T. comes with multiple modes depending on which trim you have, including:

  • Sport.
  • Eco.
  • Normal.
  • Slippery.
  • Sand/Snow.
  • Mud/Ruts.
  • Rock Crawl.
  • Baja.
  • Tow-Haul.
  • Off-Road.

In addition, Ford offers four levels of High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) systems.

  • HOSS 1.0: This comes standard on the Outer Banks and Black Diamond trims and has a conventional passive damping system, long-travel coil-over springs, and a solid rear axle with variable-rate coil-over springs.
  • HOSS 2.0: This is standard on the Badlands, Everglades, Heritage Edition, and Heritage Limited Edition trims, and any model with the optional Sasquatch Package. It includes a front passive damping system, HOSS-tuned long-travel Bilstein dampers with end-stop control, and an independent front suspension.
  • HOSS 3.0: Standard on the Wildtrak, this has the same features as HOSS 2.0. Semi-active dampers, a front powder-coated steel bumper, front steel bash plates, and a Ford Performance severe-duty steering rack and tie rod ends are also included in HOSS 3.0.
  • HOSS 4.0: This is exclusive for the Raptor trim and builds on HOSS 3.0 with the addition of integrated front reservoirs and remote rear reservoirs.

Most trims can come with the available Sasquatch Package, which adds 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a lifted suspension for greater clearance, and electronically locking front and rear axles. This package also comes with 35-inch mud-terrain tires and molded fender flares to help deflect rocks and objects from hitting the Bronco's body panels.

Fuel Economy

From what we know at this time, and based on the EPA's 2023 statistics on fuel economy for the Bronco, we expect this SUV to get the following miles per gallon:

  • Trims with the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine get 20 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway, with a combined rating of 20 mpg. With the Sasquatch Package, this drops to 18 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway, with 18 mpg combined.
  • The Badlands trim with either the 2.3-liter or the 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine gets 17 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway, making for 17 mpg combined. If the Badlands has the manual seven-speed transmission, it gets 16 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 17 mpg.
  • The Black Diamond trim and ones with the Sasquatch Package with a seven-speed manual transmission get 16 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, making a combined rating of 17 mpg.
  • The Raptor, with its 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, gets 15 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway, for 15 mpg combined.

Towing Capabilities

The maximum towing capacity for both the two-door and four-door Broncos is 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. For more towing power, choose the Raptor trim and haul up to 4,500 pounds with the right equipment.
